Clinical results of RegJoint™ Implant in CMC1 revisions (2020)

Dr. Kennedy et al. (2020) evaluated the bioabsorbable RegJoint™ implant in treating thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint osteoarthritis. The implant acts as a temporary scaffold promoting fibrous tissue ingrowth and preventing metacarpal subsidence.

Study findings (22 patients, mean follow-up 36.5 months):

  • No wound complications or adverse tissue reactions
  • Grip and pinch strength, as well as range of motion, were comparable to the contralateral hand
  • No significant bone erosion or joint subluxation on radiographs
  • Mean DASH score: 42.9, VAS: 2.7, PEM: 49
  • The implant was deemed safe and functionally neutral, especially in revision and combined procedures

Conclusion:
RegJoint™ is a safe and effective adjunct for selected patients with challenging thumb CMC arthritis, particularly in revision cases.
