Clinical comparison of RegJoint™ and Swanson prosthesis in MCP joints (2010)

Comparison of RegJoint™ implant and Swanson prosthesis in MCP joints.

This randomized clinical trial compared a bioresorbable poly-L/D-lactide (PLDLA 96/4) implant with the Swanson silicone prosthesis in metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint arthroplasty for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Key findings:

  • Both groups showed similar improvements in pain relief and hand function.
  • The PLDLA implant was not associated with implant fractures or osteolysis, unlike the silicone prosthesis.
  • Palmar subluxation was better corrected in the Swanson group.
  • Grip strength and functional hand use improved in both groups.
  • The PLDLA implant may be a viable alternative for patients at risk of silicone-related complications.
